Behind the scenes at a kagura
Kaguras are social events not just ceremonial performances. Folks eat,
drink and talk during performances. Food and drinks are usually cooked
and served by women. Some of the cooking is done during the event and
the rest is done in advance.
There is usually no charge to attend a Kagura but it is a good idea
to bring a two liter bottle of shochu or sake to the shrine and to make
such a present. By the way, it is rare for people who live North of Kyushu
to drink shochu on a regular basis.
